Description: This class is designed to improve awareness of ones physical and mental well-being. Students will focus on eating disorders and self-esteem, family life education, substance abuse, death education, and CPR. A $5.00 fee will be assessed for CPR certification. Part of this course will focus on the Minnesota Graduation Standard Individual & Community Health (8A).

Subjects Covered

Course Topics:
1. Substance Use and Abuse
     The student
         1. Will learn how to research topics useing notecards and bibliographies
         2. Will study different issues relating to drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
         3. Will understand the differences between debating staus quo issues and opposing viewpoint issues.

2. Eating Disorders
     The student
         1. Will recognize symptoms of eating disorders.
         2. Will acknowledge the physical, mental, and emotional dangers associated with eating dosorders.
         3. Will know where information and professional services can be obtained for persons with eating disorders.

3. CPR - Infant, Child, and Adult
     The student
         1. Will explain how the EMS system works and what signals and situations require a peson to call for an ambulance.
         2. Will identify the signals of breathing emergencies, including choking, and will demonstrate how to provide care.
         3. Will identify the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and for injury, and describe how tho control them.
         4. Will identify the signals of a possible heart attack and describe how to provide care.
         5. Will identify the signals of cardiac arrest and demonstrate how to provide care.

4. Family Life Education / Diseases
     The student
         1. Will review male and female reproductive systems.
         2. Will study the prevention of pregnancy, prenatal care and the birth process.
         3. Will study dating.
         4. Will identify prevention, symptoms, and treatment of STD's.

5. Death Education / Aging / Suicide
     The student
         1. Will recognize the effects of aging.
         2. Will understand the inevitability of death.
         3. Will recognize the signals of potential suicide.
         4. Will understand the funeralization process.
